If I Must Die...

If I must die

by Refaat Alareer (1979 - 2023)

If I must die,

you must live

to tell my story

to sell my things

to buy a piece of cloth

and some strings,

(make it white with a long tail)

so that a child, somewhere in Gaza

while looking heaven in the eye

awaiting his dad who left in a blaze–

and bid no one farewell

not even to his flesh

not even to himself–

sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above

and thinks for a moment an angel is there

bringing back love

If I must die

let it bring hope

let it be a tale

Award-winning actor Brian Cox recites Refaat Alareer's 'If I Must Die'

Se me toca morrer

Translated to Galician by @miguel_scoresby

Se me toca morrer,

quero que vivas

e contes a miña historia,

e vendas as miñas cousas,

e merques un corte de tea

e unhas cordas,

(que sexa branco, de cauda longa)

para que en Gaza un rapaz

mirando ao ceo á cara

esperando polo pai morto nunha chama

(e non se despediu, non lle deu tempo

nin do seu corpo sequera,

nin de si mesmo)

poida ver o papaventos,

ese papaventos meu, por ti feito

voando alto

e poida crer por un momento

que devolvendo amor

alí hai un anxo

Se me toca morrer,

que dea esperanza,

que sexa unha historia.
