If I Must Die...

If I must die

by Refaat Alareer (1979 - 2023)

If I must die,

you must live

to tell my story

to sell my things

to buy a piece of cloth

and some strings,

(make it white with a long tail)

so that a child, somewhere in Gaza

while looking heaven in the eye

awaiting his dad who left in a blaze–

and bid no one farewell

not even to his flesh

not even to himself–

sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above

and thinks for a moment an angel is there

bringing back love

If I must die

let it bring hope

let it be a tale

Haddii aan Ifka Dhaafo

Translated to Somali by @AMAGuudcadde

Haddii aan ifka dhaafo

Adigayga danbaynoo

Qisadayda werinteeda

Adigaa u xilsaaran;

Inta aad dhaxalkayga

Alaabtaan ka tegoo dhan

Suuqa geyso ku soo gad

Walxo aad ka samayso

Dunta miiqa leh ee

Midabkeedu cad yay

Samaydeedu dheer tay,

Si uu ilmaheenna

Qasa jooga agteedu

Kolka uu cirka fiirsho

Aabbihii ka yar dhawro—

Aabbe uu qarax qaatay

Oo gunaanadna seegay

Jiidhku aanu dubaaxin

Oo xataa lafihiisa

Xushmad an lagu aasin—

Dayuurad ad ka samaysay

Duntii aan ka hijrooday

Iyadoo inta duushay

Hawadaa dul sabbaysay

Arko oo u riyaaqo

Iyadood malag mooddo

Jacayl aan ifka oollin

U sidoo ku sabaaya.

Haddii aan ifka dhaafo

Geeridaydu adduunka

Yididdiilo ha siiso

Qiso aan abid guurin

Maqnaantaydu ha reebto!
